Kahani poori filmy hain!!

We Indians are deeply attached with movies. We like to watch movies, follow them and inculcate that cinematic dynamism or filmyness in our lives. Its fun entering our own house uttering “Maa, mai aa gaya!” Movies in India go beyond entertainment. They have become our habit, our lifestyle.
I doubt which of the following influences is more profound: The influence of films on society or that of the society on films. For time being let us focus on impact of films on society. People like being influenced by cinema. They are normally tired of their routine lifestyle and want some relief. And cinema provides them this relief. People want to forget all their worries while watching a movie. This is a prime reason why people favour populist cinema rather than art or realistic genre.
In past 100 years of Indian cinema, films have showed varied aspects: entertainers, pot-shot takers, comic capers, thought provokers etc etc etc. But there is no denying that people want cinema as a relief-giver. We want the hero or heroine to do all those things that we can’t do. We want our own story on screen, with twists and turns and all the Masala. And somewhere at the back of our mind, we also want our real life story to be ‘Filmy’. It’s just what Ramadheer Singh says in Gangs of Wasseypur, “Jab tak Hindustan me ’saneema’ rahega, log aise hi ‘Ullu’ bante rahenge. Sabke dimag me apni apni  picture chal rahi hain…” And ironically, this dialogue got popular due to the ‘Saneema’ itself!!

  1. Truly said. For a person usually entertainment means to do stuff something different from what he/she regularly do (like for a cricketer playing football is an entertainment but for footballer usually not) or to watch what he/she can't do (as you said; some other proofs are rang de basanti{everybody dreams to do the same what the heroes did to make India a better place to live; munna bhai series etc.)

  5. Saar you have touched the right chord.... but the question remains: Does cinema truly reflects the society? As we go through the long list of movies released last year, we can see more of dabanggs and housefulls.... Recent zila ghaziabad... They represent society only in the sense that the characters resemble some personalities in those regions...but are there heroes who take the whole responsiblity of the society on their shoulder and fight for the truth..cant we make films like ijaazat, chupke chupke, and such others to convey the real message without any exaggeration...
Still the audience just want one thing and that us entertainment... So this is what we get.. Action packed dhamaka with no real message... Thats why movies like dabangg grabs all the major awards n movies like shanghai do not get a nomination at least...

Let me not be over critical... I also watch these movies for time pass but really need is to make movies on social issues which are creating a plethora of problems before the society and to bring to light the true picture....

  6. I think the whole idea of Indian Cinema is to make people enjoy their lives in two hours of time, and making them feel that they are the heroes of their lives. At a point where a common Indian man is struggling everyday in is hectic life films provide them the attitude, character, strength, imagination and all these qualities which are required to gain success. Films provide them this by portraying Hero as the role model for every Indian and giving the Hero success in every department so as to motivate a common man to win over his struggles. This way I think Indian cinema is doing a great job by seeding the real minds to become real heroes of India

  7. People also like those movies to which they can relate. Like Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, tamil flick by Gautam Menon. Most of us must have gone through a similar painful experience and thankfully most of us have survived that phase. People related to it in a big way. Relatable - that's the key.
